Introduction of the Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM) system at SBB Cargo
SBB Cargo has become the first European rail operator to be awarded initial certification as an Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM). By the end of 2010 every freight wagon that SBB Cargo carries must be allocated to a competent authority responsible for maintaining it (an ECM). The ECM is responsible for ensuring that all wagons are maintained in accordance with the maintenance plan and applicable regulations. This further increases the security of cross-border transport services. It also means, though, that from 1 January 2011, only wagons that have been allocated to an ECM will be accepted for haulage.
